Another game down: Illusion of Gaia (SNES)

Device: Retroid Pocket Mini

What a weird game. Banger soundtrack, compelling aesthetic. The "Age of Exploration" setting was a fun change from a more typical medieval fantasy, sci-fi, or steampunk setting.

But the moment-to-moment gameplay was only so-so. The action RPG combat was serviceable but seldom all that rewarding, and the dungeon design was kinda convoluted and mediocre. Had some cool boss designs, but the difficulty curve was all over the place. Part of the fault might lie with an indifferent translation, but the story was only okay.

Overall, while no one flaw is damning by itself, and there are cool things about it, its various parts just never quite clicked into a coherent whole.
